“Sugar Island,” the visually stunning coming-of-age story exploring identity, family will play at six art house theaters across the U.S. on Art House Theater Day – Thursday, July 30.
Winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Edipo Re Award for Inclusion & Sustainability (2025), Best Latin American Film at the Cinema Tropical Awards (2026), and Best Film Directed by a Woman of Color at ADIFF (African Diaspora Film Festival), the film centers on Makenya (played by Yelidá Díaz), a 14-year-old Dominican-Haitian teenager forced into a sudden confrontation with adulthood after facing an unexpected pregnancy.
“Sugar Island” is directed by Afro-Caribbean filmmaker Johanné Gómez Terrero and is a joint production between the Dominican Republic and Spain.
