Backed by a soundtrack that fuses reggaeton classics with hidden gems from the island’s indie scene, the Puerto Rican drama follows a teenager who returns to his childhood home. It’s there his world is turned upside down when he meets Luife and Kiki, two rebellious local misfits, pulling him into a thrilling summer filled with adventure and a complicated love triangle.
After leaving for Los Angeles in the wake of his father’s death, 17-year-old Javi returns alone to Puerto Rico for his grandfather’s funeral. Back in his childhood home, the suffocating heat, buried memories, and untamed surroundings quickly convince him this will be the worst summer of his life. That is, until he meets Luife and Kiki—two larger-than-life social misfits who pull him into their orbit and reshape his return in unexpected ways. As the three drift through a vibrant, ever-evolving Puerto Rico, Javi is drawn into a tender and volatile love triangle that challenges his understanding of love, friendship, and grief.
A coming-of-age journey steeped in the Caribbean, it explores the island’s vibrant rhythms and scenery from the turquoise Caribbean waters to its lush rainforests.
Directed by Carlitos Ruiz-Ruiz, “Summer of Three” is in Spanish with English subtitles and will screen at the Tribeca Film Festival.
