Jamaica’s Shavoy Alcock Creates Award-Winning Short Film

Monroe University is celebrating the success of “Tyrone,” an award-winning documentary that has earned recognition at film festivals and competitions across the United States and Canada.

The 5½-minute documentary tells the story of Tyrone, an artist whose life journey is defined by resilience and redemption. Through candid conversations with the student filmmakers, Tyrone reflects on growing up on the streets of New York City, enduring multiple incarcerations at Rikers Island, and coping with the loss of his mother at age 13. Despite those challenges, Tyrone discovered purpose through art, ultimately rebuilding his life and finding success within New York City’s arts community.

The documentary captures both the hardships he overcame and the opportunities that emerged when he chose a new path forward.

“Tyrone” has received recognition from several film festivals that include Toronto Short Film Festival , Los Angeles International Short Film Festival. It was accepted as an official selection of the Newark Independent Film Festival 2026.

Alcock, an inspiring 18-year-old filmmaker from Elizabeth, Jamaica directed the powerful short film—created with students in the new Entertainment Media Program. Motivated by Tyrone’s influence, he enrolled in Monroe University’s new Entertainment Media Program, despite having no prior film-making experience and during his studies, he created the short documentary.
