Travis Knight’s sweeping adventure about love, sacrifice has been selected to open the 40th edition of AFI Film Festival next month.
The epic stop-motion fantasy directed and produced by Academy Award nominee Knight, who is a fan of fantasy epics, is based on the novel by Colin Meloy.
The voice cast touts an impressive list of Hollywood actors that include Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Amandla Stenberg and Maya Erskine.

“Sixteen years is a long time to carry a story with you. To finally emerge blinking into the daylight at AFI Fest is a profound honor,” shares Knight, the President and CEO of Laika, the animation studio behind such classics as “Coraline” and “The Boxtrolls.”
The 40th edition of the Institute’s annual film festival will take place October 21–25 at the TCL Chinese Theaters in the heart of Hollywood and feature a curated selection of red carpet premieres, special screenings, world cinema, documentaries and short films.
The full festival lineup will be unveiled on September 29. Individual tickets will be available for purchase on October 3.
