The Tom Cruise movie following a class of elite, hot shot Navy pilots at the Fighter Weapons School known as Top Gun was a 1986 blockbuster that defined a generation.
Decades since its release, the film has reached that kind of success which you don’t really see too often anymore, as it broke through into the cultural lexicon practically overnight.
With likable characters that include Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt, action, drama and memorable lines such as”I feel the need for speed,” its success was immediate.

“Top Gun” also launched the career of Cruise played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell to global superstar status.
Last week at Cinemacon, Paramount confirmed that a third Top Gun movie is currently in development. Deadline reported in 2024 that a third film in the franchise was in development with Ehren Kruger returning to write the script
The film re-releases in theaters May 13th, 2026.
