He’s the longest-running Black film critic in television history with a career that spans two decades. Film critic Shawn Edwards, who reviews movies and television on Fox 4 News in Kansas City, Missouri, began his professional film criticism career in 1997 as an associate editor for the PitchWeekly where he won several journalism awards for his news stories, features and film reviews.
A founding member of the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), he’s also the creator of the annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television, an event that honores achievements in Black filmmaking and television.
In 2022, Edwards created the Black Movie Hall of Fame with a mission to preserve and document Black history and culture and honor the pioneers of Black cinema.
A prolific film critic and writer who has written for Vibe, The Source and XXL magazines, he recently sat down with Noel T. Manning II’s “Meet Me at the Movies,” to reflects on his 25-year career and his mission to celebrate cinema.
