Jason Segel seeks out his nerdy side for ‘Despicable Me’

“I think recycling is a myth,” jokes Jason Segel at a press conference to promote his latest project ‘Despicable Me.’ “It’s an internet myth and I don’t think it’s real.”

Segel, (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) who is affiliated with the Make-A -Wish Foundation, voices the character of Vector in the 3-D animated movie.

A hilariously whacky cartoon, which centers on the bizarre world of Gru, a “super villain” whose plans to pull off the biggest heist of all time are complicated when three orphaned girls come into his life, its loaded with cool gadgets and a clever script that’s bound to ensure repeat viewings.

With cast members who include Steve Carell as Gru, Russell Brand as the voice of the mad scientist Dr. Nefario and Julie Andrews as Gru’s demanding mother, it’s produced by the folks behind Ice Age and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!

A newcomer to the world of animation, Segel, who recently starred in the box-office hit I Love You, Man jumped at the chance to tap into his geeky side for the voice of Vector.

“Being able to voice a character that looks nothing like me was exciting,” he says. “In real life, I’m like super good looking and super tall and so to play a character that was nerdy was exciting, for all of a sudden I could be 5:3 and be wearing an orange jumpsuit and be nerdy,” he jokes. “I tried to find my dorky self from when I was really young. I’d left it behind, but I re-channeled.”

A brilliant family flick with great comedic timing, adorable characters, eye-popping visuals and a moral message, Despicable Me is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

“The thing about this movie is that it has an underlying sense of heart and I cried at the end and I am not a crier,” he claims. “Part of the theme is that even the coldest heart can be melted by love and that really got me
