First Black Animator Floyd Norman To Receive Honorary Oscar

It’s an accolade given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement” and past recipients include Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, Quincy Jones, Euzhan Palcy and Debbie Allen, who received the statuette last year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced the recipients to receive the golden statuette and they include actor Glenn Close, director Ridley Scott, and Floyd Norman, Walt Disney Animation Studios first Black animator.

An animator and storyboard artist, Norman began his 65-year career at in 1956 with his first Disney feature film “Sleeping Beauty.” He contributed to classic feature films “The Sword in the Stone,” “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book” and “Robin Hood,” as well as the short films “Donald in Mathmagic Land,” “Goliath II” and “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.”

His other notable film credits include “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Mulan,” “Toy Story 2” and “Monsters, Inc.”

Norman, who is 91 years old, has inspired generations of artists and will receive his Oscar at the Academy’s 17th Governors Awards event on Sunday, November 15.
