Hollywood’s award season kicked off on Saturday with the 1st Annual Diversity News Magazine Awards.
From actress Kate Linder, known for playing Esther Valentine on “The Young and the Restless,” to director Russ Emanuel, whose films span across a diverse range of genres, awards were given to deserving individuals in various genres of entertainment.
The brainchild of Esteban Escobar, Executive Publisher of Diversity News Magazine, the event was co-hosted by Nancy Salim, Dr. Nathalie Beasnael and actress Dawna Lee Heising, and celebrated individuals in Hollywood who have used their medium to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
From entertainment to business, community leadership to the arts, the honorees included vocalist Lourdes Duque Baron and actress Toni Hudson who received a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts award.
Founder & Executive Director of Sensee Foundation of Hope Inc., Jartu Mariam McConnell received the Humanitarian of the Year award and model Kimmarie Johnson was honored with Model of the Year — Diversity Champion accolade.
A celebration which felt both timely and necessary, it honored culture, identity, representation, and the people who are helping create a more inclusive world.
With an eclectic mix of leaders, creatives, entrepreneurs, professionals, community advocates from diverse backgrounds, other award recipients included Côte d’Azur WebFest founder Clinton H. Wallace who was presented with two accolades including a Lifetime Achievement Award in Photojournalism and our very own Caribpess NewsMagazine writer Samantha Ofole-Prince who received the Outstanding Independent Journalist of the year award.
Hollywood has long been a place where stories influence the world, and this celebration reinforced the importance of diversity in the entertainment and cultural industries with special recognitions given to otolaryngologist Kevin A. Peng, MD and transgender rights activist Bamby Salcedo.
The evening also highlighted the powerful connection between culture and creativity with music and fashion providing a vibrant backdrop during singer-songwriter Pepper MaShay’s performance.
MaShay, who has an extensive body of work as a background and session singer and has performed with Tina Turner, Cher, Celine Dion, and Mick Jagger,and while onstage shared a heartfelt inspiring story that demonstrated why representation matters.
“For me, this event represents a dream,” says Esteban Escobar. “We began Diversity News Magazine with a vision to inform, connect and celebrate diverse communities and give people a voice and opportunity to have their stories told.”
Held at Barnsdall Theater in Hollywood, amidst the backdrop of the iconic Hollywood sign, the Diversity News Magazine Awards was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when talent, culture, and inclusion are given the recognition they deserve.
