He ranks among the 25 Most Influential African Americans and has been named “America’s Best Preacher” by Time Magazine.
A compassionate leader, Bishop T.D. Jakes is a nationally known preaching powerhouse who fills sports stadiums and draws several thousands of worshipers to his church in Dallas.

In honor of his 35-year career in ministry, world leaders, dignitaries and celebrities recently held a tribute honoring the faith-based entertainment mogul. Aptly titled “A Triumphant Journey,” the two-hour, black-tie celebration was hosted by director/writer/producer Tyler Perry and CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien and held at AT&T Winspear Opera House in downtown Dallas.
Produced by Ron Weisner Entertainment, the evening was filled with tributes, including a special surprise appearance from international media icon Oprah Winfrey
There were musical performances from R&B artists Chaka Khan, Jordin Sparks, Ledisi, KEM, Kelly Price and gospel artists BeBe Winans, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond, Israel Houghton, Karen Clark Sheard, and Mary Mary. In addition, film stars Loretta Devine, Mike Epps, Kimberly Elise, Meagan Good and Charles Dutton, as well as Christian leaders Dr. Bernice King, Pastor Paula White, Pastor John Hagee and Pastor Sam Rodriguez paid homage to Bishop Jakes for inspiring so many.
Jakes, a senior pastor of the 30,000 member Dallas-based church The Potter’s House, was celebrated for a career spanning more than three decades. He was lauded for his accomplishments in ministry and entertainment, as well as his dedication to humanity and family.
“My husband has committed his life to empowering others that they might have joy, love and hope in their lives. The event was an opportunity to salute him for the millions of lives he’s touched, the hearts he’s changed, and the lives he’s saved through his stirring messages,” said Serita Jakes. “It was a blessing to honor him for 35 years of unwavering service.”
Other notable guests who were on hand to celebrate Bishop Jakes’ 35th anniversary include Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, Glynn Turman, Emmett Smith, Tracey Edmonds and Deion Sanders.
The Dallas Black Dance Theater praised Bishop Jakes’ milestone anniversary with a stirring performance, and luminaries such as Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Phil McGraw, the Mandela family, cast members of the upcoming film “Sparkle,” delivered moving video presentations.
