From staring as a troubled Bronx hairdresser in Spike Lee‘s “Summer of Sam” to playing a cold-blooded killer in “Carlito’s Way,” John Leguizamo’s craeer spans films, television, comedy, and theater.
The four-time Tony Award nominee will be honored with the Career Achievement Award in recognition of his groundbreaking work in multiple platforms, as well as his recent standout performance in “The Odyssey.”
Directed by Christopher Nola, the film delivered the biggest live-action opening weekend of the year and surpassed $1 billion at the global box office just three weeks after its release.
Leguizamo, whose career spans dramas, blockbuster franchises, comedy, and theater, made his breakout performance in Brian De Palma’s “Carlito’s Way.” Known for his energetic performing style and fierce advocacy for Latino representation in Hollywood, his other projects inlude Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet,” the voice of Sid the Sloth in the “Ice Age” animated franchise “Precinct 13” and “John Wick 1 & 2.”
He will receive his award at the Critics Choice Association’s 6th annual Celebración of Cinema & Television which will take place on October 2 in Beverly Hills.
Founded in 1995, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) is one of the largest critics organizations in the world and produces a series of Celebration events to recognize historically underrepresented communities, including the Celebration of Black Cinema and Television and the Celebración of Cinema and Television, which honors standout performances and work, both onscreen and offscreen, from the Latino and Hispanic entertainment community.
They will also honor Judy Reyes who stars in both ABC and Hulu’s “High Potential” and “Scrubs” with the Trailblazer Award. Peacock’s “The Paper” Oscar Nuñez will be recognized with the Vanguard Award and actor and master puppeteer James Ortiz will accept the Innovator Award for Amazon MGM Studios’ epic “Project Hail Mary.”
Other honorees include Inde Navarrette will receive the Breakthrough Actress Award – Film for her role in Focus Features’ “Obsession” and Laysla De Oliveira will be honored with the Breakthrough Actress Award – Series for Paramount+’s “Lioness.”
