It’s a Battle of Wits Between Generations in a Meatier Second Season of ‘Beef’

Seasoned with comedy and drama, the plot marinates slowly as it follows a Gen-Z and Millennial couple who try to outsmart each other.

It all begins when a young couple Ashley (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin (Charles Melton), witness an alarming fight between their boss Josh (Oscar Isaac), and his wife Lindsay (Carey Mulligan) at an exclusive country club where they work.

With the physical altercation immediately captured on their cell phone, events escalate in a way that threatens to ruin the couples.

For creator, writer, director Lee Sung Jin, who knows fans are used to seeing older people battling with much younger generations. the plot simmered from a real-life incident he experienced.

“I had overheard a heated debate coming from a couple’s home. The incident itself wasn’t that interesting,” he continues, “but it was everyone’s reactions to it when I retold the story to my younger Gen Z peers. They were all kind of like aghast, clutching their pearls, being like, “Did you call 911?” Like, “Is everyone okay?” shares Lee Sung Jin, who based the setting of the series at an upscale country club he spent time in .

“I was just trying to write what I know as I spent time at the Montecito Club and what I observed was most of the members were Silent Gen and Boomers and most of the employees were Millennials.”

With “Beef,” we are reminded that perception is not reality as once again, its case of the have and have not with people at the opposite end of the class spectrum.

The series harnesses a deeper conversation about how we choose to air out our grievances touching on several universal themes such as class and generational warfare and power struggles.

The first installment of “Beef,” starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, premiered in 2023 and went on to become the most recognized and award-winning anthology series of the 2023-2024 season.

All eight episodes of “Beef” Season Two will premiere globally on April 16, only on Netflix.
