“King of the Dancehall” is a film, which Nick Cannon wrote, directed, executive produced and stars in.
Shot on location in Jamaica, the film stars Cannon as a New York ex-con called Tarzan who travels to Jamaica to start a minor-league drug-smuggling operation, but ends up falling for a local girl who introduces him to the world of dancehall music.
Featuring a soundtrack by Beenie Man (who also narrates the tale), it’s a documentary style drama which aptly captures Jamaica’s eclectic culture. The film stars Whoopi Goldberg, who plays his ailing mother, Oscar-winning actor Lou Gossett Jr., Collie “Collie Buddz” Harper, Kreesha Turner and Kimberly Patterson as Cannon’s love interest. Busta Rhymes, who delivers the comic relief, rounds up the cast as his crazy cousin Allestar ‘All Star Toasta’ and is the highlight of this exuberant and energetic rags-to-riches-to-rags tale.
The 100-minute drama was acquired by YouTube Red after debuting on the film circuit, notably at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s the directional debut for the rapper, actor (“Chi-Raq”), record producer, radio and television personality who has hosted several television shows including “Wild ‘N Out,” and more recently “America’s Got Talent.”
